Féilte 2016

Katelyn Murphy, second year pupil at Margaret Aylward Community College, and Marie Clonan, teacher, formed part of the plenary discussion panel at this year's Féilte in the RDS on October 1. Féilte is the annual festival of quality teaching and learning in Ireland organised by the Teaching Council. The topic of 'wellbeing' of young people is a regular feature of Féilte and this year the focus was on physical wellbeing. The other two members of the plenary discussion panel were Dr Ciara Kelly and Karl Henry from RTE’s ‘Operation Transformation’. The session was chaired by RTE's Keelin Shanley. Wellbeing can involve incorporating physical activity into the school day as a way of promoting pupil wellbeing, improved concentration, academic performance and self esteem.

PE can play a vital role in the lives of young people as it can be the sole source of physical activity for many. Katelyn shared how she maintained a healthy and happy lifestyle by participating in and having fun in her PE lessons, playing soccer with the school team and playing GAA sports with her friends in Setanta GAA club. This has helped her to study, do well in her exams and enjoy life to the full. She is a wonderful role model to us all.
